The land of Maingard has been invaded by an army from another dimension. The enemy are hellbent on destruction and slavery, and have made a violent statement of intent with the destruction of two cities, the so called 'Jewels of the East'. Their agents have already recruited traitors within the cities of the West, such as Tannaheim where King Anjoan has been assassinated and his young daughters abducted in a bid to force a quick surrender.
 
Accompanied by Bex (the thief) and her symbiot refugee from another destroyed world, Ishtara, Prince Garlen leads his men in a desperate attempt to rescue his sisters. But will he be Garlen the Warrior or Garlen, the Lord of the Inns as he is derogatively known by the citizens of Tannaheim.
 
Meanwhile, in the forest to the north, Jerone Witchguardian tries to evade his pursuers in order to find what he seeks - his mentor and companion, the Witch Janda, now reincarnated and reborn. In the streets of Tannaheim, the agents of the shadowy Phantom, work to find the traitors responsible for the regicide of Anjoan.
 
The future of Maingard is on a knife edge as the invading host turns it attention to the West and Tannaheim.
